Careful & Safe Driving

Winter just would not be the same without snow. Luckily in Rexburg there is an abundance of it. Snow is magical and provides hours of entertainment here, but snow can also be very dangerous. The biggest problem about snow in a college town is driving in it. Not only is Rexburg very busy with students going from point A to point B, but many inexperienced snow drivers reside in Rexburg. So in order to stay safe this winter semester here are a few tips to remember.

First, everyone should know even the most experienced driver still needs to be careful. They are still vulnerable to the snows fury. Be sure that when you start to feel comfortable you are being even more careful. Extra care needs to be taken when facing the open road. Second, if you do not need to be somewhere, then the best thing to do is stay home. Don't take those long drives to get out of the apartment, because this increases your chance to get into an accident. A few other tips include:

  • Drive slowly- this allows you time to manage your car.
  • Brake easily- if you brake to quickly you can skid.
  • Don’t power up hills
  • Drive with your lights on. This allows other drivers to see you at all times even when the conditions are poor.

These tips are helpful if you are driving in the snow, but another problem that can be faced while traveling to near cities, such as Idaho falls, is becoming stuck in the snow or in a snow storm. This is why it is recommended to keep a "survival kit" in the trunk of your car. These kits should be filled with blankets to keep warm, candles to provide light, and sometimes heat. Also, some sort of food to hold you through the storm such as trail mix, and salt and/or kitty litter to put in front of, or behind your wheels to provide traction.

We cannot stop the snow from coming, but we can prevent accidents caused by driving in the snow. Following these few simple tips will help ensure that you, and your car, make it to your destination safely, and in one piece.
